GOod neighbor with ESL Focus - VIRTUAL

(male/female volunteers)

A Good Neighbor Volunteer supports one refugee family in their integration to the Sacramento community by providing empowerment and mentorship. Most often, Good Neighbors share practical advice and help familiarize refugees with American culture, customs, and navigating systems and community resources. In addition, you will assist a gender-appropriate family members with ESL.

Time Commitment and Responsibilities:

  • 1-2 hours a week for 6 months. Schedule will be determined by you and the family.

  • Female volunteers often begin very basic English tutoring with the women and children. Most women in the family will not speak any English and are most commonly illiterate in their own language.

  • Must exercise high degree of patience, flexibility and creativity when practicing English.

  • Communicate consistently with Good Neighbor Coordinator about refugee needs.

  • Record and report weekly volunteer hours served via Track-It-Forward.

VOLUNTEER APPLICATION STEPS

  • The first step in becoming a volunteer with World Relief Sacramento is to submit a volunteer application.

  • Once you submit an application, a World Relief representative will contact you with information to register for a required 4-hour Volunteer Orientation held once a month. This orientation is meant to give you an introduction into refugee resettlement as well as introduce our guiding volunteer principles.

  • After attending, all volunteers must attend World Relief's virtual ESL tutoring training, observe 2 ESL classes (or female volunteers can view recorded classes if schedule doesn't allow), discuss final placement with a Volunteer Coordinator, submit a liability waiver, complete a background check, watch Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) webinar, in addition to being cleared by two references.
