Good Neighbor First Step:

  • The first step in becoming a Good Neighbor Volunteer with World Relief Sacramento is to submit a volunteer application. Please note, if you would like to form a Good Neighbor Team, please complete the application on the Good Neighbor Team page.

  • Once you submit an applciation, you will be prompted to register for a required 4-hour Volunteer Training. This training is meant to give you an introduction into refugee resettlement as well as introduce our guiding volunteer principles: cultural and religious sensitivity, empowerment principles and self-awareness.

  • After attending, all volunteers must discuss final placement with our Volunteer Associate and complete a background check.

  • Visit a refugee family 3-4 times per month (minimum 6 month commitment) to share practical advice and help familiarize refugees with American culture, customs, navigating systems and community resources.

  • Practice conversational English. Most women in the family will not speak any English, so we ask volunteers to have a high degree of patience, flexibility and creativity when practicing English.

  • Explore the local community with refugee family.

  • Communicate consistently with Good Neighbor Coordinator about refugee needs.

  • High degree of patience, understanding, flexibility and self-awareness.

  • Complete a volunteer application. With the exception of the Good Neighbor Team Application, all applications are the same.

  • Attend a Volunteer Training and pass background check; and if transporting, driving record check.

  • Record and report monthly volunteer hours served via Track - It - Forward.
