Hospitality Volunteers consist of: Welcome Meal, Grocery Shopper and Warehouse Organization

Welcome Meal and Grocery Shopper First Step:

  • The first step in becoming a Hospitality Volunteer with World Relief Sacramento is to submit a volunteer application. Please note, if you would like to form a Good Neighbor Team, please complete the application on the Good Neighbor Team page.

  • Once you submit an application, you will be prompted to register for a required 4-hour Volunteer Training. This training is meant to give you an introduction into refugee resettlement, as well as introduce our guiding volunteer principles: cultural and religious sensitivity, empowerment principles and self-awareness.

  • After attending, all volunteers must discuss final placement with our Volunteer Associate and complete a background check.

  • While refugee families wait to apply for their necessary cash and food benefits, volunteers can purchase welcome meals and groceries and place in a family's apartment prior to their arrival.

  • Families are given adequate groceries (usually 1 - 2 days worth) until they are able to shop on their own.

  • Volunteers receive email updates with arriving families and sizes, along with their grocery shopping needs.

  • Volunteers first shadow a World Relief staff or intern to familiarize themselves with the items that are purchased at a local grocery store and Halal Markets.

  • Volunteers have the option of donating groceries or requesting reimbursed from a family's Resettlement Grant (within 3-5 days).

  • Volunteers deliver items either to a families permanent housing, temporary housing, or the WRS office.

  • High degree of patience, understanding, and flexibility.

  • Complete a volunteer application. With the exception of the Good Neighbor Team Application, all applications are the same.

  • Attend a Volunteer Training and pass background check; if transporting families, driving record check.

  • Record and report monthly volunteer hours served via Track - It - Forward
