Public school enrollment for refugee children is conducted by World Relief staff members or volunteers. There are different enrollment processes for each school district in the area. Some school districts refugee families are settled in are: Twin Rivers, San Juan, Folsom Cordova, and Sacramento City.
All school districts require passports/birth certificates, immunization records, and proof of residence (rental agreement and/or utility bill). After a family's first Refugee Health Clinic appointment, children will have received all the necessary immunizations and will then be able to enroll in school. Some districts require English assessment tests as well.
Twin Rivers is the school district for families living in the North Highlands area. There is no enrollment center for the district therefore you have to enroll at each individual school.
San Juan School District is the school district for families living in the Arden Arcade, Carmichael and Fair Oaks areas. This school district has an enrollment center in Carmichael to enroll the students in any school in the district. At the enrollment center, there are a few workers from Afghanistan who can help enroll the families in their own language. The district requires an English assessment for the students to complete, which will either happen at the time of enrollment or be scheduled for a different time. There is a school program to provide a backpack and some school supplies if asked and the students are present.
SJSD has informative videos on a variety of topics, including enrollment, the differences in schools in the United States, family participation, attendance, student meals, using the Parent Portal to check grades and more.
Folsom Cordova is the school district for families living in the Rancho Cordova area. There is no enrollment center for the district therefore you have to enroll at each individual school. The process of enrolling has two parts: paper application and online supplement. In order to access the online supplement, you must turn in the paper application at the school office and they will send you a link to set up an account.
Sacramento City is the school district for families living in the South Sacramento area. This district has an enrollment center to enroll the students in any school in the district. An English assessment is conducted while the children are enrolling.
